I think this Web 2.0 viral craze started when the “numa numa” guy put his video online, that's when we really saw how things could go viral. Anyways, he tried his little trick for the second time, but didn't go so well as the first one, and it's obvious why.
If you don't know what I'm talking about, it's this guy called Gary Brolsma, from New Jersey. He made a video, uploaded it on a site, everyone laughed, had fun, and by the time he was 20, he already had his face showing up in newspapers all over the world, for one simple reason: his video became viral, and everyone wanted to show it to their friends. He didn't know anything about viral marketing, but timing and a few other reasons made things very fortunate for Gary... if only he had a site.
Now, I suppose you do have a site, and that makes you very fortunate. However, with all this information shared online these days, it hard to achieve much when it comes to real traffic!
Here are a few examples of what marketers share online these days: subjects discussed inside info-products, stuff that you're paying for, and the reality behind the scenes. This is just to make sure I will emphasize the Viral Marketing idea correctly.
Let me shed a little light on this matter. On the one hand viral traffic usually means free traffic. When you get viral traffic, everything's free. On the other hand, PPC traffic means spending money!
Are you planning to get a credit approved by your bank, just to pay for PPC instead of going to the bank to get that cash? Sites like YouTube, Google, Technorati, WordPress or any other popular site out there don't pay for PPC, it is the viral marketing done around them that does the trick, and if you think it's just luck, think twice, here's just a random example:

Now, you may wonder, “why would Matt, the guy behind Wordpress, look at these stats?” - Because this helps him find out what people want, precious information which he then passes to the open source community built around WordPress. The result: plugins related to the searched topics. But, this is just an example. They offer their users what they want, so, new fans show up each day, with no PPC costs whatsoever.
Of course PPC can provide a very handy and much needed boost in the early stages of your website or product, to help it go viral, but the groundwork needs to be in place first in order for that to happen.
The message above was posted one year ago on the mailing list, but today, those first 5 keywords are very popular, everyone wants them! Some people don't even join a site if it doesn't offer a widget to stick it inside their blog!
A larger contacts' list does not necessarily mean online success, but rather more time spent talking instead of watching stats while viral traffic comes to your door. You can be anyone, anonymousity is reflected very well inside my viral marketing researches (e.g. see Gary's story, the “numa numa” hit made him popular).
You don't need to have a list to get into viral marketing and have those sales you want to have. You can use viral marketing to build a list though.
Viral marketing means that your 1 visitor a day turns into over 300 new visitors a day, just because each and every one of your visitors tells others about your site.
Here's a list I managed to build in just 90 days from launching my last viral product:

As you can see inside my Aweber stats above (Nov 2007 - Jan 2008), in just 3 months, I got over 14,201 currently active people in the list and growing daily! Again, you don't need a list to do viral marketing, but rather, you use these viral marketing techniques to build your own list, just like I do right now.
I say “97% Wrong” because luck can be improved and worked on. If you use your brain when promoting your site your luck and chances will increase, but if you just hope luck will bring you lots of sales, that won't happen. Most ideas are good if they stick to the “common sense” principle, but let's see why some are more likely to produce the desired effect. Here's a random one:
You've probably heard of the “Free Hugs” campaign... If you haven't, here's a screenshot:

There's a guy sitting in a crowded area of a certain city, who offers hugs to people passing by. It's an idea, and it works. Now, that's viral, and Juan Mann (the free hugs campaign initiator) got so many hugs that he invited others to do join his campaign through a YouTube video. Soon after, people all over the globe started sending their videos and sharing their happiness.
Strictly related to your online business: you don't have to leave the house to see viral results online. I don't. And this is not all; each and every thing you'll learn here can be applied to almost all current fields of interest.
What I want to emphasize here, is that once you have an idea, you can put your knowledge to work and make it happen. A site getting half a million uniques in the 3rd month after launching is a fair tribute to what I am talking about inside this letter.
